June 2019, Speaker – Dr Shane Burke

Last Saturday – 8 June – Dr. Shane Burke presented a talk to the MFHS General Meeting based on the Peeltown (Western Australia) encampment near Rockingham in 1829.

Shane spoke of the difference between ‘history’ and ‘archaeology’, emphasizing the need to seek out primary sources as much as possible to tell the story of events and people. He provided an informative backdrop to how the stories of the past are told, highlighting that records can be incomplete, missing, or sometimes misleading. For this reason, it is possible for there to be many versions of a particular event, or person.

About twenty three hardy souls braved the rain and cold to hear Dr. Burke and they were well rewarded with a well-crafted, enjoyable and interesting talk.
